He sipped his tea

She kissed her coffee

As formally as could be

Words were exchanged

But conversations didn’t mean the same

At the back of her mind, were grocery and lullabies

He pretended to hear

But his mind steered clear

Once the ruling queen of hearts

Was sat here describing her daily tasks

And the boy who knew no more than books

Was sat consciously adjusting his looks

There was a past to this story

When a geek had met a beauty

They were different, so unlike

But love flowed within, alike

She loved her simple intelligent guy

But had ambitions of touching the sky

She bid him good bye for a while

She wanted to make it worth living a life

He was the one who was always content

For him money was a means and not the end

They were different, so unlike

But love flowed within, alike

And then…

Couple of years in waiting

Soon the two hearts were together beating

He looked the same, nothing about him had changed

She was popular as ever, her beauty hadn’t withered

She brought him a nice blue tuxedo

A remembrance, a memento

For she would be leaving soon this time

Returning to her beloved wasn’t yet destined

Few years later they met again

She was sat across him in a plane

He seemed to be dressed for power

An elegant blue tie on a plain white collar

He gestured to her like she were an acquaintance

She responded back with equal acceptance

Pleasantries were exchanged

But conversations no more meant the same

For they were different, so unlike

Love flowed no more alike

Today they were sat face to face

A fluke of luck, as they say

She had stories of motherhood to share

He had tasks far important to adhere

He sipped his tea

She kissed her coffee

Words were exchanged

But conversations did not mean the same

For they were different, so unlike

Love had once, flown alike
