This movie trails the life of Binodini, a young widow who comes to live with Mahendra and his mother. She starts an affair with Mahendra despite the fact that he is married. She leaves him as he is very self-obssessed and chooses to marry Behari instead, who refuses to marry her. Finally, Mahendra promises to take her Behari, who agrees to marry her, but on her wedding day, she mysteriously disappears. The movie trails the life of these three people as they deal with several issues.

It’s one of the very rare art films which did decently well on the box office. Brilliant performances by Rani Mukherjee, as a blind and mute girl who finds and overcomes all hurdles in life and Amitabh Bachchan, as her teacher who develops a special bond with her are what make the movie worthwhile. This experimental art film featured on the “Top 10 Movies of the Year” list by Time magazine.

A seven year old widow, Chuiya is sent to spend her life in renunciation with other widows where she meets the beautiful Kalyani who is forced into prostitution to make ends meet. Shakuntala, a smart widow is also a main character. Kalyani starts an affair with Narayan, who takes her away only to find out that his father had been one of her clients in the past. Unable to take the humiliation, she drowns herself. After Kalyani’s death, the whole burden of saving Chuiya from prostitution and a pathetic life falls on Shakuntala. One of the must watch art films of Deepa Mehta.

This movie follows the life of a Shakespearean theatre artist who suddenly quits. The reason behind his quitting theatre, something which he is fanatic about, is shocking for Shabnam who decides to investigate on this matter. The story unfolds with him teaching Shabnam tricks of the trade and his relationship with Vandana and the main reason for leaving theatre. This movie packed with powerful performances went on to win the National Award for the best film that year.

10. The Japanese Wife (2010)

The movie revolves around the relationships between Snehmoy, Miyage and Sandhya. Snehmoy and Miyage are pen friends who have never met, yet they continue to have the bond of marriage until Sandhya comes to live with him with her son Poltu. He feels attracted towards Sandhya. How their relationships and lives change is what the movie is all about. It bowled over critics and was highly praised for the beauty and minimalism of art cinema.
