Ever wondered about getting to know about that one thing that literally brings light and joy to your life? We are talking about scented candles, oils, flowers and scented sticks! Scented products have been an imperative part of every household. Since it has been something that is around you almost 24×7, we decided to make you aware of the same.  So here are some interesting facts, which would very much amuse you, about the same!

Advent of Scented Candles

Did you know that the earliest surviving candles originated in China, around 200 BC, and were made of whale fat. Whereas, in ancient Rome candles were made of tallow. Tallow is a hard fatty substance made from rendered animal fat, used (especially formerly) in making candles and soap. European candles of antiquity were made from various forms of natural fat, tallow, and wax.

Scented candles were popularized in Colonial America when people began creating wax by boiling sweet-smelling bayberries. In the 1990s, soyabean wax came in the picture, as cleaner burning candles became more readily available, so did the variety of scented candles we have today.

In 2002, wick-less scented candles were introduced, these are ideal for households with pets and children, because they don’t require an open flame to burn.

Enough of the history! Let us talk about how these gorgeous candles are made.

The making…

Scented candles are made by adding fragrance oils to candle wax during the manufacturing process. Wax candles are usually made from paraffin, but they can also be made from materials like beeswax, plant waxes, or tallow (animal fat). Gel candles are made by combining a polymer and mineral oil. A wick is embedded in the wax or mineral oil. When the wick is lit, the wax or oil is heated to its melting point. In scented candles, the heat releases the fragrance from the scented oil in the candle. Different materials yield different results when burning, and adding too much oil to a candle mixture can make the candle give off soot when it burns.
