Down there goes the assumption that women don’t watch porn, and that ‘sanskaari’ women don’t do this. A few reasons why Indian women don’t acknowledge they watch porn –

Adult Films are considered immoral

The jury has been out on the issue of porn’s legality and it will continue to do so. The Indian government had banned several adult websites in 2015 and it caused uproar like none other. In a country where sex education itself is frowned upon, porn is viewed very negatively. No one is sure how India went from the land of Kamasutra to the land of bans. However, all this has led to a negative perception of porn and it is considered immoral to watch it.

No discussion about good and bad

Sex films has been feeding the voyeuristic pleasures of humans ever since the invention of the video. It has now become a billion dollar industry and is consumed worldwide however there are different kinds of porn, with the good, bad and ugly.

Most young adults are introduced to it by their friends or today because of the internet. Since there is no discussion on it at homes or even at educational institutions they are unaware of how to react to this phenomenon. This affects their habits and they fall prey to all the negative effects of watching harmful sex films.

Question of character

Most Indians love to portray their women as very well mannered, family oriented, the typical ‘bahu’ types who cannot be viewed as anything but sisters and mothers! Women’s sexuality is not even discussed because after all according to them women have sex only to have babies. A woman in charge of her sexuality can be threatening and it’s easy to judge a woman who comes out to say she watches sex films or is alright with anyone else watching it.

Porn is a hotly debated topic around the world. It is known to create rifts in relationships with porn addiction, create an unhealthy expectation of sex, objectify of women and create negative body images at a young age. There are also issues with human trafficking and abuse of women as a part of creating sex films.

While it is not possible that sex films can be done away with as most people view it only for recreation and as a mental release, sex filma itself is evolving with even high quality videos created especially for women or couples, which shows that it is no longer the domain of just young men!
