Aliens are a very important part of culture, fiction and movies today. Not only do we like to watch movies and read books about them, but many people report UFO sightings. Compared to even 50 years ago, the trend of talking about aliens is way more today. What could be the reason for it?

Mythology

Almost all mythology talks about celestial beings with great powers that live outside of this world. There are some evolutionary theories that contend that advanced technology which Egypt had back in the age of pyramids was definitely not of this world and some alien invasion at that point is what dramatically accelerated our pace. So maybe the search for aliens is not new, we just have better tools for it?

Answers in the stars

Since the prehistoric age, man has looked to the stars for answers. The answers for the kind of weather it would be, whether it would be a high tide and even whether there is enough light to venture out, all lied in the open sky. Naturally, with our basic needs more or less provided for and many comforts and luxuries achieved, we now look skywards again to provide another meaning to continue striving.

Loneliness without aliens

There is also an existential loneliness in being the only intelligent species around. Just like the genius who has no friends, this loneliness can be crushing and anxiety-provoking. This existential anxiety of there being nothing else out there and ‘this is it’ is something we are not prepared to face. Therefore, we want to explore the possibility of aliens, even at the risk of finding a strong, deadlier race, not to mention all the loss we face when our devices and people are lost in space.

The drive to learn

Humans have always been curious, wanting to learn. Experimentation and exploration have made us move ahead and bought us where we are today in terms of advancement. One of the reasons we search for aliens is because you feel there may be a lot to learn from them. Maybe they handle problems similar to ours in a better way? Maybe they have no concept of time and money like we do?

The possibilities are interesting and endless. While we have done pretty well in some areas of life, in some others, we are stuck in a vicious cycle of chicken and egg, and we honestly don’t know how to get over that. For example, not all humans are moving at the same pace. Some are privileged and many are not and are current systems have no solution for it.

Expansion

One of the last reasons why we look for aliens is to expand our reach. Just like warriors went to different countries to explore and later, take over, now we have a drive to expand our presence beyond just the earth. We perhaps dream of a vast human kingdom spanning across species and across planets. Maybe thinking of human presence beyond just earth makes us feel powerful and less vulnerable.
